Family Guy is Peter Griffith an ignorant, spineless slob not a million miles away from a another rotund father figure, who presides over a mentally deficient brood who, coincidentally are not so dissimilar to another not so nuclear family OK, so it's like the Simpsons, but unlike Fox's other anicom, these guys aren't afflicted with a nasty case of journdis. Written, directed and voiced by one Seth MacFarlane, Family Guy is a slightly sourer slice of the animation pie. Like Homer, Peter is useless and insipid father, but where as his predecessor nether the less loved his clan, this guy is inconsiderate to the point of catatonia.
Fortunately he has a slightly more balanced wife to maintain a level of respectability in a household that contains a talking dog and hyper intelligent psychotic baby. It's these elements that divorce it from that other show (Thank the Lord! We can dispense with the yellowed ones comparisons now) - present with the middle class shenanigans is plenty of far-flung fantasy.
Brain the dog is the most urbane of the group, giving well-needed advice to his master, and Stewie the baby is a Hannibal in the making. Other than the utter moronicy of the main man, it's these guys who provide the most fuel for the gag machine, and boy, does this thing guzzle. We're in scattergun territory here, fire enough bullets and one's bound to hit, politic correctness being the target. With content that cuts close to the bone the show's got in some trouble with its advertisers, some who've pulled out due to content. The episodes I've caught contain nothing to get worked up about (unless you're name ends in Bush). OK, so one concerned suicide cults. With this harsher take on family guy Fox hopes to up the ante on its former, hoping to keep the genre fresh and thriving. The jury's out on weather or not it's going to last the decade, but for the time being this hits the mark.
