Muahahahaha!!
Frasier has always been a major part of Channel Four's traditional Friday night comedy line up, and this new season opener has all the neurosis, wit and one-liners us Frasier fans have come to relish. Roz has set up a blind date for Seattle's favourite radio shrink in their local coffee bar, but he spies another, and in a classic display of apologetic blustering, Frasier finds himself trying to fend off unwanted attentions of the wrong ladies while trying to chat up the right one.
Ultimately, the gag is that Frasier's new date is apparently the spitting image of his dead mother and, of course, everyone can see it except Frasier, so he invites her to the families' favourite holiday cabin for his dad's birthday weekend. That's the genius of the show. It compels you to think "well, I wouldn't want to be in his shoes... Again." Comedy dominoes are set up, ready to fall cringingly one by one while Frasier's spectacularly appalling luck at the dating game is revealed yet again. Brother Niles is equally hopeless of course, packing an entire suitcase of insect repellent for the trip; "I was once chased off the pier by a mosquito the size of a pelican!"
All that was missing was the appearance of the funniest cast member; Eddie, a Jack Russell with a penchant for slapstick and, reportedly, his own luxury dressing room. Not one of the best episodes, but a promising start for one of the most reliably enjoyable shows on TV.
