Well, maybe it’s just me and my tastes, or this is the best use of Channel 5 since it started. I don’t mean to discount the obvious appeal of all the late night ‘erotica’ that seems to be on the wane in favour of more extreme sports shows. And I’m aware that C5 pulled off a mighty coup by nabbing ‘Xena’ and showing it the scheduling respect that the Beeb and C4 obviously don’t have for their fantasy TV shows. But this show, which goes down in the notes as ‘The weird world of cult films and videos’, is the most effortlessly entertaining thing in ages.
It’s pretty much what it says on the packet – clips of a wide variety of different culty movies and TV shows, but whereas similar efforts like C4’s ‘Exotica’ picked only from a narrow range of films (mainly the saucy 70’s euro horrors on the ‘Redemption’ video label), ‘OutTHERE’ brings stuff in from all over the place. A lady writing her signature with a giant paintbrush stuck up her thingy. A guy putting his thumbs into a live ladies eye sockets up to the hilt. A woman rubbing off a robot till it gives birth to a little robot. Unstoppable female assassins kicking up hell in a car park. A packet of cereal flakes being sucked off. There’s something here for everyone, even gran.
Oops, almost forgot the other really funny thing about this. The show is linked together by this insane woman who stands hands on hips in a super-cheap cod surrealist studio. This gal, whose name escapes me, is supposed to be some kind of super being who is channelling these images into your living room. She comes up with bucketfuls of wacky bullshit along the lines of – ‘Are you AWARE of the UNREALITY ?..are you ABSORBED by the DIMENSION of crystal TECHNOLOGY !?!’. And all this delivered with a stunningly straight face, and edited together to look really ‘cool’. She’s like Antoine de Caunes gene-spliced with Rod Serling and given boobs and a silly quasi-futuristic costume. She’s perfect. I must make her my WIFE!. Until that particular union can take place, I’ll stick with this.
