Drop the Dead Donkey. Spanking the Monkey. Choking the Chicken. Now the entertainment world bears witness to more bizarre animal cruelty with Smack the Pony. This is the second series of the highly successful sketch show starring comedy trio Fiona Allen, Doon Mackichen and Sally Phillips (with the talented Sarah Alexander hiding in the shadows). The sketches work despite using all the clichés in the book (putting on makeup in a moving car, breast size, bikini lines) while retaining a dry and often surreal edge which the girls seem to take into their stride. The straight faced nonchalance with which Doon snogs a nude male statue in an art gallery is typical Pony action. No classic sketches yet, like the window cleaner with a kitten in his pants, or the new age healer who kicks her patient while miming pulling things from their nose, but a promising start to the series nevertheless. These girls are cute and funny, and Sally Phillips, once the giggling receptionist from the Alan Partridge series, already has a couple of fan sites on the web. One small grumble; I have to wonder why they are still bothering with the songs at the end of the show, I mean, it’s a parody gag that would work as a short sketch without being stretched into a full song and dance number. Oh well. As American comedian Stephen Wright once said: You can’t have everything - where would you put it?
