Jovial wide-boy Johnny V cut his teeth on the winch inducing teen comment film show ‘Moviewatch’. Despite the irritating comment from the four multiplex scum sitting at Johnny’s side, the show was pretty returnable thanks in total to the Vaughnster’s jolly piss-taking demeanour. A few years of Big Breakfasting later and he’s still the best young (well, under 40) presenter on the box, a natural in a sea of bubble-eyed shouting twats in colourful t-shirts. So giving him another crack at the film review/discussion programme in a prime-time slot should be dead cert right ? – hmmm.
Dropping in three celebrities to chew the fat isn’t so much a bad idea, it’s just that the choices and opinions of the assembled crew are mundane to the max – tv critisism is so pointless when it’s this predictable. Having Johnny lead into each film by soullessly quoting a couple of reviews from newspapers comes off particularly badly.
What sinks the show totally are the dumb little skits Johnny ‘stars’ in that he shows to his fellow guests throughout the half hour. These witless bits of comment feel like the worst of the Empire magazine school of space-filling film writing, and when the studio lights come up the man himself looks uncomfortable for perhaps the first time ever in his TV career. With the colourless Woss’ster currently ruining Film ‘99’s reputation on the Beeb and a string of zero-effort late night cut-and-paste film shows dotting the other channel’s schedules this should’ve redressed the balance. The producer’s would do well to check out C4’s seminal ‘Vids’ to see how to do this thing properly.
