A lot of people have very fond memories of the original version of this 70’s British ‘kick the crap out of the bad guy’ show. Powered by a massive dose of testosterone the professionals featured perms, smirching innuendo and many a Ford Capri that exploded for no apparent reason. All the attributes that television has tried to repress for the last ten years. But now it’s back and this time produced by Sky. Can Sky produce telly to the same standard of the terrestrial stations? We’ve so far had football soap ‘The Dream Team’ and quite a bit of soft porn masquerading as probing docudrama, but an all out action show? Well it’s certainly safe to say that this version of The Professionals is every bit as entertaining as the original. Completely mindless with a plot so opaque I thought I was watching an Antonioni art house flick, I was pleased that Sky had stuck to the previous shows’ guns. But hold onÂ… What could this be? A bird as a member of the Professionals? What a stunning 90’s ‘twist’. As she’s bit of a cracker, I’m wondering which one of our intrepid duo will get to pull her first. We are also presented with a new chief, played by the Equaliser himself Edward Woodward. Performing with an expression that suggests that at least his bank manager is happy, Woodward has made so much crap in his career that this is a breeze. But what about the replacement for those men of men Body and Doyle? And why has one got an American accent, worse still a back-story, and a ‘sensitive’ one to boot? Even so our new boys do fine, but in our caring and sharing ‘new’ Nineties can they carve out a slice of the action as iconic as their previous incarnations? Only one way to be sure. Bring on the exploding Capri!
