The Saturday Show
TV, jerry carpenter, 02:00:00, 01 October 2001 Rating: F1

So ‘Live and Kicking’ is dead and limpid. The BBC’s Saturday morning show went out three presenters heavier than the golden days when Forbes and Peters were captains, and a darn sight more joyless. So in a second attempt to combat the unstoppable twin assault of ageing geordie wonderboys Ant and Dec, who do the Beeb draft in - Perhaps some hot new unseen talent, or maybe someone from a currently more successful teen show ? Heck no, some smartarse over in the committee room obviously thought it would be a much more cracking joke to hire Dani Behr. Yup, Dani Behr, the useless sloany club hag from C4’s iconic ‘The Word’. Hahahaha – a snowballs chance I reckon.

It’s a shame really, because I’ve always felt that even if the show on the other side was rubbish on Saturday, then at least there’s something to switch over to in between the ad breaks – ‘L & K’ did have a couple of good cartoons, y’know. But this experience is a travesty of a mockery of a sham. The kids in the audience sit around looking miserable and uncomfortable while a bunch of professional performers twice their age prance about looking equally unhappy being there. The skits are really tired - a gameshow bit where kids risk their material possessions, a karaoke segment where the kids and the presenters torture a few current pop faves, some comedy stuff with the ugly sarcastic one from BBC2’s ‘The Ozone’ dressed as Britney. All this book-ended by the Behr’s half-hearted enthusiasms – ‘GreatÂ…’, ‘ExcellentÂ…’ mumbles our Dani in a vain attempt to paper over the sounds of drifting tumbleweed and show commissioners strangling themselves to avoid the blame. Damnit, even the cartoons and US live action comedy-drama import stuff sucks.

Usually TV that unknowingly ends up embarrassing and cringe worthy makes me rub my hands with glee. Maybe I’m more grown up these days, or maybe it’s just because it’s too early in the morning for this kind of Schadenfreude, but this time the so-bad-it’s-good factor isn’t there. This is just so bad it’s s**t.
