If you told me after the very first time they showed this (two years? three years ago?) that I’d be singing it’s praises a few years down the line I’d probably have laughed you a face full of spittle in my whiny nasal home counties accent. The first two episodes got my hackles pushing through my shirt partly due to the irritating camera style (I figured it pointlessly ripped off ‘NYPD Blue’ which at least had a reason to use shaky-cam – cops/action n’ all that), but mainly because of the main characters. Ugh a bunch of whining post-yuppies, all too good looking for my like (apart from the mouthy Scotty cow), and all damned dull to watch.
But now I’m excited to know it’s being re-run – have I taken a pounding blow to the skull? Nope. ‘This Life’ is a show that I just took some taking to. So the flatmates were a bunch of bores for a while, but with time each of the characters was sent up against one long term emotional trial or another. And speaking of trials, while initially the young lawyers screen woes revolved to a large degree around dull court-room dramas, later on the legal drama took a back seat in favour of more sex n’ relationships story-lines. More ‘shaggin’ basically. Which was always great, as the sex scenes on ‘This Life’ have been some of my favourites in UK TV. Especially foxy Kira – ay-yi-yi! For about a year or so the skunk striped sub-character secretary always won my Onan award.
Oops – tangent. So there’s bags of excellent wince-worthy story threads lined up to re-enjoy once the first few episodes pass. Milly’s epic excuseathon with Egg (Egg ?! – who’ve thought you’d get used to that) that backs up her affair with her boss. Warren’s wild cottaging exploits. Miles and Anna’s revamping of the Richard Burton/Liz Taylor affair. Egg’s mad-for-it Dad. Insane museli-stealing sunken faced Delilah. And Kira – ay-yi-yi !. It’s influenced almost every irritating ‘adult’ drama series of the past year (‘Metropolitan’ – ugh), but it’s head and shoulders above those damp efforts – and it’s got Kira in it – uuuhhhhh.
