What went wrong?
TV, Jerry Carpenter, 20 January 1999 Rating: F3

Tee-Hee, I am shirking my responsibilities. With a week ahead that sees the start of a whole fat fist full of new quality drama and comedy, the only show’s I’m finding myself absorbing eye strain from are still those born from the fiery pit of trash. So when I could be watching ‘The Royle Family’ or ‘The Sins’, instead I’m eating peanuts and slumped in front of crud like ‘What Went Wrong’. What went wrong, indeed ?.

WWWrong is one of those shows which looks back at a series of disasters using first hand reports and shaky camcorder footage, with the question in mind, ‘What went wrong ?’. So we’re treated to exciting footage of a Stealth bomber dropping out of the sky at an air show, and then get interviews with all the spods whose street it ploughed into. Then we get the same footage again. Then some military guy comes on and tells us ‘What went wrong’ – apparently the plane malfunctioned !. No shit !. Then a bit more of the footage again. It’s all tied up with photos of the pilot meeting the people whose house he totalled, and narration reminding us of the power of the human spirit, all backed up with touching piano music. You get the picture.

They’ve been pushing this sort of garbage since the early nineties, when the classics like ‘World’s deadliest predators’, and ‘When stunts go bad’ first hit the small screen. No one but a foolish fool would expect any honest sensitivity or real insight from such fodder, but I’m always drawn into them by the exciting mix of voyeuristic violence and cheese flavoured packaging. This one lacks the real bite of its nastier forerunners, but scores high on the large explosions meter. Also it’s transmission time, post tea-time on a Sunday, is a great piece of scheduling – this sort of stuff always goes down a treat with tea and cakes. To say anymore would be wasting my amazing powers of opinion, so I’ll leave it there.
