WWF Heat
TV, Jerry Carpenter, 20 January 1999 Rating: F4

A great hour of ‘in-ring action’ !!. No, I’m not watching those German unmarked video tapes again – I’m having a lovely wet Sunday indoors watching WWF. Last time I watched TV wrestling was ‘World of Sport’ and it was a case of largely unglamourous fat men slapping each other silly while old ladies shouted obscenities and shook their handbags. When did all this shit get sooo popular? – beats me. I remember buying a WWF t-shirt almost ten years ago when it was starting to catch hold of the ‘imagination’ of the masses, now it’s got them by the balls for sure. There’s sooo much money running through WWF, and it’s obvious from sitting through this that’s it’s all being spent, because it’s a biiiiiiig show.

The actual sport part is still a mystery to me. It’s always been fairly stage-managed, but they’ve taken it to a whole new level of spandex pantomine here. The guys lumber around at half the speed of the average human, and the actual fighting looks like they’re doing rehearsals. But it’s not the sport you watch it for, it’s the other stuff. Only about 20 percent of running time is fighting, the rest is made up of bizarre tangental entertainment, and this stuff is GREAT.
