Remember the days when every other month you could buy a ticket to yet another variant on the Die Hard formula – either on a boat ("Under Siege"), a bus ("Speed"), in a football stadium ("Sudden Death"), or train ("Under Seige" again !,number 2). These knock-offs got duller and duller to the point that you didn’t even need to watch past the first five minutes, by which time you would’ve clocked the blue-collar good guy, the setting, the bad-guys take over set-up, and the love interest (not always compulsory if the guy was man enough).
Well the original is back, after taking out the trash in a LA skyscraper, an airport, and around NYC. Bruce Willis, who you think wouldn’t need to slip on the sweaty vest again after his recent ‘grown-up’ films like "Sixth Sense" is going to have to pick between one of two ‘not so hot’ script concepts which will be re-branded with the Die Hard name.
So, in one corner we have "God and the Devil", which will be "Die Hard in the jungle". This puppy involves a bunch of female treasure hunters after Nazi Gold in the Caribbean, and where the wise-cracking super-cop John McClane fits in amongst this still beats me. There’s a second draft already penned which adds both a daughter for Johnny-boy, as well as a potential end-of movie ‘is he dead or not?’ scenario. Just imagine having to wait for a fifth film to find out eh?, what a ‘blast’.
And in the insane corner we have "Blood of Eden", which is "Die Hard under water", where "Eden" is an underwater complex, and Brucie will be battling Ninjas. That’s right, NINJAS !, HAHAHAHAHAHAHA !. Anyways, the Willis has yet to make his mind up, but I’m fingers crossed for the Ninjas. Of course I never understood why they never did "Die Hard in Space", seems obvious enough. "McClane, you’re busted down to street-cop again, but on THE MOON !". Happy Trails indeed.
