Christmasy films of recent years, ‘Groundhog Day’ aside, should be enough to set shivers down anyone’s spine. I don’t have a problem with the fact they’re aimed at kids – some kids films are great. But there’s something about that snowy holiday season that means script writers feel obliged to crank up the saccharin levels and wheel out the tried and tested formula machine. Usually I’d just ignore, but now it seems they’re treading on sacred ground with their latest effort.
Now you really shouldn’t touch Dr Seuss, they tried it with an animated version and it just didn’t work. So you’d be a fool to attempt pulling a decent tip of the hat to the rhyme-obsessed, jaggedly illustrated, madly-illogical work of Dr S right? Nah, because ‘Splash’ director Ron Howard and Jim Carrey are having a crack, and the trailers now up on the internet for all to enjoy. Ugh. It looks totally neutered. They’ve attempted a ‘Tim Burton’ look but it just doesn’t play. The CGI Grinch looks a million miles from his literary counterpart – he just looks ‘wrong’. They want to stretch the whole thing to film length but it just won’t go – there’s going to be filler, and it’s going to suck. Ok, it’s just the trailer, but it’s bad enough to ruin my Christmas early and usually I wait to unwrap the first pair of sports socks before that happens.
