A simple piece of news, no more shocking than any of the other titbits circulating about the next Star Wars movie. American TV moody hunk Jimmy Smits (previously employed for his brooding skills in ‘LA Law’ and ‘NYPD Blue’ ) is up for a role as a baddy in the Darth Maul mould in the next two films. Great news, because Smits would make a great Dark Jedi, and all the sites reporting this think the same. End of story.
Not. A few days later and there’s some dissent in the rumour ranks, not because people are questioning the authenticity of the story or whether Smits is the right man to wield a red light sabre. The animosity abounds because of the credit for the scoop, because certain folks (comingattractions.com) are peeved at other folks (aint-it-cool-news.com) for taking the Smits tale as it’s own. Comingattractions (well, some bloke called Patrick) has put round a letter to the other rumour sites looking for approval on an official castigation of AICN ( The largest rumour site of ‘em all run by the Austin big-boy Harry Knowles ). Patrick is into the idea of doing things by the book to make sure credits mentioned where credit’s due, and so has copied Knowles in on his original letter, the results of which he plans to publish this Monday. Knowles has quickly fired off a response of his own in which he states his own case, and gets a final jab in by accusing Patrick of pulling a similar stunt (stealing a scoop) years ago when he was new to the business. Ooh – bitch bitch !.
Where do we stand in all of this , being that Foocha is partial to a bit of rumour mongerage on a regular basis ? – we don’t give a hoot which monkey brings us our bananas, just as long as they’re fresh.
