Among teenage girls in Tokyo the word 'Kawaii' (literally meaning 'cute') sums-up just about anything from the latest must-have cellular phone to the current Ricky Martin. Anything 'Kawaii' sells but it's a slippery beast and perhaps not surprisingly, this months 'Kawaii' is most likely next months 'Cack!'
Surfing is this years big thing and the trendiest girls with the highest 'Kawaii' quota are managing to look quite the scary, weathered surfer. Whether it's on the beach, or most likely tripping the streets of Tokyo, looking washed-up has its costs...
We all know that too much sun is dangerous and can ultimately be dangerously uncool but Surfer girls are doing their damnedest to outdo each other at the tanning salon with scarily dark tans. Hair is long and streaked with... grey and make-up comes in candy colours, pink, orange and blue. Fingernails are long, multi-coloured and marbled at prices of up to around 100 pounds.
Blouses are short-sleeved, swiss-miss, worn with bleached, flared denims or as-short-as-you-dare hotpants. Boots or sandals come with 15-20cm ankle cracking platforms. Must-have girl accessories include; a Louis Vuitton or Prada knapsack and the latest DoCoMo cellular phone with a personalised beaded strap.
Not to mention, the never-seen-without-it 'Kawaii' essential, 'Hello Kitty' accessories. 'Hello Kitty' practically invented 'Kawaii' and is just about the ultimate in teenage girl cute appeal.
