When I’m not sitting eating pork pies vacantly in front of the magic box watching ‘Buffy’ I do actually have other things to do. Like writing for this fine Web site. And I also have a proper job too, and this year for the first time the lines between fantasy and reality became somewhat blurred as a result of it.
I was charged earlier this year with the task of coming of with some promotional tie-in stuff to coincide with the release of the big Jim Carrey Christmas vehicle ‘The Grinch’. As is the nature of what we do, this took the form of a downloadable .exe file that when double clicked puts the eponymous character of the film on your PC desktop, wandering around stealing Christmas stuff. So I’m all geared up to start animating the moany green guy, when it hits me it’ll be easier to film myself first, and then draw the green fellers personage over me. Two weeks later and it’s done, and watching the little chap creeping round the screen it occurs to me that
. I’M THE GRINCH.
A month later the film comes out, and the majority of the promo stuff hits the streets. Suddenly It’s ME in the window of Pizza Hut, and it’s ME on the TV trailers. Even flicking through my bible, the Guardian Guide, I catch MYSELF staring out from the article on Grinch. Now I’ve never been famous before, so this is all quite a treat, so why it is that on going to the cinema to actually see the blooming film I freeze up. Can’t bring myself to buy a ticket. I figure it’s the horror of realising it’s might not be my name up there on the titles. The sharp shock of such an experience might snap my fragile mind, rendering me a gibbering idiot. And so I remain trapped between two worlds, the star of the years biggest movie in one, and ‘just some guy with serious delusions in the other’. Merry Christmas then folks, and pray for me when the film comes out on video.
