On a roll
Talk, Julie Miller, 17 January 1999
I’m going to build a tree house. Not that I have a big enough tree in my garden or even come to that, a big enough garden for a tree - but that’s just detail. After reading my latest self help book ‘unstopable people’ by self-motivation guru Adrian Gilpin (Centry Business Books- £8.99), I now know that if you really want something in life (and you have to really want it) you can get it. I have to say though that I have spent a lot of my life wanting things that I’ll obviously never get, ...a lottery win ...parents who listen, (and don’t just say ‘oooh thats nice dear’ when you tell them some piece of life stoppingly fantastic news) tits that don’t abandon ship just because I’m on my back (which lets face it girls is when you need them to look their best) all these (and many many more) are things that over the years have kept me dissatisfied with life.

Now though, after reading the above mentioned book I’m ready to take on the world. I’m motivated and ready to unleash my ideas. First I’m going to write that novel, I’ll start a small business selling fantastic things that will be seen in Elle Deco, I’m going to be famous, rich, skinny, funny, happy, I’m going to buy a bigger house with the money I’m going to make selling my life story to the Daily Mail. People will ask me how I did it with a small child and no formal training in anything apart from a couple of evening classes in pottery. My mother will do a spread in Hello. Meg Mathews will put me on her A list. And I’ll glide past the bouncers at the Met bar without so much as a ‘by your leave’. I’ll wear sparkling dresses to glittering parties. While saving the trees/children/foxes. I’ll make sure every child who goes to a comprehensive school gets a chance to study for a degree. I’ll buy every copy of the Big Issue and turn every other luxury river-side apartment block into a place for inner city kids to hang out. I’ll get the graffiti at the end of my parents road removed forever because the kids who do it will be too busy working towards their degrees to be bothered with spray paint. I’ll grow my nails. Make every farm organic, and stop the supermarkets from taking over the world.

All these things according to my self-help book are really possible if I really, really want them to happen.

I do! I do! Well maybe I’m not so fussed about the sparkling dresses or Meg Mathews party invites, but the others..... I'm starting with that tree house. MDF, drift wood, 9” nails and a tree hmmm....a tree now there’s my first challenge...... Top Home
